This spectacular rammed earth, new-build country house in rural Wiltshire is composed from the very earth on which it sits. Built on the site of a former brickworks, Todhunter Earle Interiors together with architects Tuckey Design Studio brought together this bold and boundary-pushing residential project, crafted from one of the oldest and most sustainable building materials.
Rammed earth is an ancient construction method that mixes earth with demolition aggregate, water and local limestone fragments. Further materials include reclaimed greenheart oak columns, Chicksgrove limestone plinths, bag-rubbed brick and cedar shingles. The concept for the house emerged from a combination of our clients’ aspirations, the context of the setting, the geology of the site, and the expertise and ambition of a multidisciplinary design team, beginning with Todhunter Earle Interiors.
While designing their house in London, before they even bought the land, we began conversations about creating a house that redefined all traditional concepts of ‘the English Country House’ – how to embrace nature, maximise views, and immerse the house in its landscape but with interiors that are as interesting as they are comfortable. With the interiors, the challenge was to balance the architectural sensibility of the project with the clients’ very textured lives and possessions, while also reversing the traditional country house concept of shutting out the elements by closing the curtains and lighting the fire.

Massive congratulations to Tuckey Design Studios for receiving Highly Commended in this year’s international Architectural Review House Award.
